Tim Thomas

IATO Hall of Fame 2024

Tim Thomas made a commitment to our sport as an outstanding distance runner in his hometown of Huntertown, Indiana in the mid 60’s.  Little did he know then, it was a lifetime commitment.

After graduating from high school, Tim took his talents to Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri where he was a standout on the cross country and track teams and graduated with degrees in Physical Education and Mathematics.

He was raised in Indiana, went to college in Missouri and Kansas, taught middle school in Kansas, landed in Wilton, Iowa in 1978 and stayed in our great state for the rest of his successful 39-year career as a teacher, coach and Athletic Director, retiring after 17 years at Galva-Holstein.

Tim has been a licensed official in Iowa more than 45 years and once he retired from education, officiating Cross Country and Track and Field meets became his passion.

Tim has officiated at NCAA, Junior College and USATF National Championships and annually works our state Cross Country and Track and Field championships, Drake Relays and various high school, college invitationals and conference championship meets around the state.  He has been a starter at the state Cross Country meet for 10 years.

Tim is a past President of the IATC and was inducted into the IATC Hall of Fame in 2010 as the recipient of the Laverne Kloster Award for Service.

Tim and Ann, his wife of 53 years, have 2 sons, Josh and wife Jeanne and their children Eden, Chase, Cale and Noelle live in Dubuque and son Aaron and his wife Jenni and children Anna and Garrett reside in Gilbert.
